footstep through torah

Important note regarding the copying of programmes

Aims / Objectives :
• Introduce the educational theme (footsteps through the Torah) to the chanichim
• Build excitement towards peulot
• Establish what the Torah is and some of the things it contains
• Establish that the Torah tells the story of the Israelites going on a long journey, and that we are going to be following this journey over the coming two weeks, looking at some of the stories, the characters involved and some of the issues they faced along the way

Trigger :
TRIGGER
 The chanichim are sitting down and two characters appear (Professor Spets Toof and Assistant Veruca Sock.) They perform a short sketch, along these lines:
 Veruca Sock has bought The Professor an amazing birthday present: a time machine. The Professor has bought a less good present and is very embarrassed about it. The Professor opens his present and discovers the time machine. He’s very excited. He starts using it without reading the instruction manual and finds himself in the wrong time zone (a dinosaur appears.) He quickly pushes some buttons and escapes. He reads the instruction manual. He discovers that to make it work he needs some batteries, some string, etc and 35 chanichim. He looks around and sees that those 35 chanichim are right in front of him. He reads on and finds out that this time machine works according to themes. Veruca Sock recommends the Torah theme.
 The Professor presses the Torah button and a (fake) Torah appears, along with a map. He picks up the Torah and gets some volunteers to pick out eight different things from the hole that is cut in the front of it. These things are: an apple, Abraham, Isaac and Ishmael, a beard, a pyramid, the two tablets, an Israeli flag and the Temple. The Professor then says he’s really confused because he doesn’t know what connection any of these things have with the Torah. Veruca Sock suggests that by following the footsteps of the Israelites along the route they took, shown on the map, he can find out. He says that sounds like a great way to spend two weeks.

Main part of the programme :
 The chanichim are split into six groups of approximately six. Each group goes with one madrich/a to a space in the room. Here they are told that they will be plaster-casting each other’s feet, creating their own 3-D footsteps with which to follow the journey of the Israelites. These will be used in the sikkum. They do the plaster-casting.

(30 minutes)

Conclusion :
SIKKUM
 Clean up
 Come together as one large group
 Explain that the chanichim must pass through the time machine in order to join The Professor and Veruca Sock on their journey. They all pass through the time machine, leaving the room and the peulah.
