The Nechalim Ball

Important note regarding the copying of programmes

Aims / Objectives :
Aim:
- To teach them manners and the art of courtship
- To show them various styles of dancing
- To have a lot of fun and a civilised disco

Trigger :
Trigger:
- In the news that day the chanichim are told about the ball
- In dinner that day, nechalim are asked to wait behind and are given invitations
- After the ma’amad they are told they have 20 minutes to changes and come down to the hall.

Main part of the programme :
Method:
- The method will run a bit like Yom Limmud, there will be three sessions, each run twice, the chanichim choose two to go to. Each seminar lasts 15 minutes.

- SESSION 1– SMALL TALK, HOW TO
- This will include things like what to say and what not to say in high society. After dinner anecdotes. Politics, the weather, how to deliver a compliment, how to deal with the aristocracy, how to introduce people. Practise how to laugh at other peoples jokes. How to propose a toast.

- SESSION 2– THE SOCIAL SCENE
- Cover what to wear, what not to wear. Where to go/where not to go. Discuss and demonstrate chivalry; pulling out chairs, walking on the correct side of the road, how to open doors (what do you do if they are pull/push/rotating.) Posture and body language. How to graciously leave a party. How to politely decline an invitation.

- SESSION 3-HOW TO BE A FOOD AND WINE CONNOISSEUR
- Include notes on fine wine, how to lay and serve a cheeseboard. Demonstrate a correct places setting; comment on: the order of the cutlery, the positioning of the wine glasses, how to hold a knife and fork, how to sit correctly, how to excuse yourself to go to the bathroom (without mentioning it) how to deal with food that you don’t want to eat. Mention port and explain you must pass it anti-clockwise around the dinner table.

- The ball is announced and they go through to the reception there will be champagne and red wine for them to drink. They are told to practise everything they have learnt in small groups. Eg; introduce someone else, make small talk, walk correctly etc. (10mins)

- There will then be a short dance class where they will cover how to waltz, how to salsa and how to tango. (15mins)

- A disco will develop. (45mins)

when they get tired
