Main part of the programme :
Method: (30mins)
- Think Labyrinth, we are now in the land before time, a few dinosaurs, not much else, tell the chanichim that the first ever Torah is going to be destroyed and that unless we can rescue it, history will not happen.
- There is a maze laid out of masking tape, there are 4 starting points, chanichim split into 4 teams and each start at a different end. They enter the maze and stop when they get to a madrich. They must perform a task to go further into the maze.
- TASK 1
- Get them to name the 5 books of Moses and one story that happens in that book and act it. (help them if they are stuck)
e.g: Genesis – Eden/flood/Abraham/Jacob/Joseph
Exodus – Moses/the plagues/Sinai/Decalogue/golden calf
Leviticus – Dietry laws/festival days
Numbers – Kippot/Balaam/lunar calendar
Deauteronomy – The Shema/Holy days/Moses’ death
- TASK 2
- Tell the group that the Torah is made up of Torah (Law) Ne’vi’im (Prophets) Ketuvim (writings)
- Everyone in the group has to memories what the Hebrew is and what they mean in English
- Explain that the laws help us to behave how God wants us to and help to create a nice society
- List the 10 commandments
- I "I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me... .." .
- "Do not make a sculpted image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above..."
- "Thou shalt not swear falsely by the name of the LORD..."
- "Remember [zachor] the Sabbath day and keep it holy"
- ”Thou shalt honour your father and your mother..."
- "Thou shalt not murder"
- "Thou shalt not commit adultery."
- "Thou shalt not steal."
- "Thou shalt not bear false witness against your neighbor"
- "Thou shalt not covet your neighbor's house.
-
- TASK 3
- Look at the Torah blessings
- Look at the English and discuss why we say blessings when reading the Torah, (allow the discussion to last no more that 5 mins)
- Why don’t we for other books?
- Why is the Torah special?
- Get one of the Chanichim to read the one before and another for after.
- TASK 4
- Tell the chanichim about the importance of commentary and that the oral Torah has never stopped. Explain that they can also take part in the oral Torah
- Read it out, pausing after each verse and ask the chanichim what they think it means. Explain that this is the build up to the revelation of the Torah
- Try to ask controversial questions to get them debating.
- Think about the imagery and the characters involved
9 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and may also believe thee for ever.' And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD.
10 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Go unto the people, and sanctify them to-day and to-morrow, and let them wash their garments,
11 and be ready against the third day; for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.
יב וְהִגְבַּלְתָּ אֶת-הָעָם סָבִיב לֵאמֹר, הִשָּׁמְרוּ לָכֶם עֲלוֹת בָּהָר וּנְגֹעַ בְּקָצֵהוּ: כָּל-הַנֹּגֵעַ בָּהָר, מוֹת יוּמָת. 12 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying: Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it; whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death;
13 no hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live; when the ram's horn soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.'
14 And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their garments.
15 And he said unto the people: 'Be ready against the third day; come not near a woman.'
16 And it came to pass on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of a horn exceeding loud; and all the people that were in the camp trembled.
17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.
18 Now mount Sinai was altogether on smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire; and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
19 And when the voice of the horn waxed louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by a voice.
20 And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, to the top of the mount; and the LORD called Moses to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.
