Aims / Objectives :
Aims:

- To consider the authority of God in the Bible and in our lives
Trigger :
Trigger: (10mins)
- The chanichim enter the room and join the madrichim sitting down as if they are waiting for someone.
- Madrichim begin to pretend they are expecting someone to arrive and get a bit anxious
- Rosh announces that we are expecting a visit from Abraham who is from a Jewish youth group called Mt. Moriah.
- Finally ‘Abraham’ (a madrich) enters and starts to introduce himself once there is quiet.
- His phone rings and he answers it saying:
“Hello…Oh, I didn’t expect you…I’m kind of in the middle of something, can we speak later?...right…I see…but…yes, but…I understand, I accept…bye”
- He leaves the room and leaves some sheets of paper as he exits.
Main part of the programme :
Method: (10mins)
- PART 1
- On the paper there is a script between God and Abraham except the part of Abraham isn’t filled in. In 4 groups the madrichim lead a discussion on the call of Abraham (see sheet attached) The groups must write their own version of the biblical speech. They must also fill in the blanks for Abraham writing what they would say in Abraham’s situation. Two from the group are chosen to produce a brief skit reading from their filled out script and perform it for the others.
- Once this is done Abraham comes back in and says, “Come to my house, to finish the session, hopefully we won’t be distracted there.”
- .PART 2 (20mins)
- The chanichim sit down in their groups, 2 madrichim + Abraham are sitting on chairs facing the back. A fourth madrich acts as a television host ie. Trisha. The madrichim pretend to be getting ready for a broadcast (“Are we rolling?”, “get me my agent” etc) Then the host welcomes the chanichim to the show.
- The host (in the style of Trisha) explains that there is a relationship crisis. She outlines the following situation
• Abraham and Sarah couldn’t have a child
• Abraham, who has been promised a long line of generations by God, has a child with their servant Hagaar.
• Sarah accepted this and remained happily married to Abraham
• Now Abraham says that he has been told by God that he will have another child with Sarah
• Sarah who has also heard from God that they will indeed have a child wants to get rid of Hagaar and Ishmael her son and start a new life with her new family.
• Hagaar claims that as Abraham is the father of her child, she should be allowed to stay and become part of the family.
• Abraham at 106 soon to become the father of 2 sons with different mothers.
• Who is in the right, what should happen?
- The characters are introduced and flesh out how they feel in the situation and provide a bit of character history
- Trisha then asks the chanichim in their groups to come up with a question for each character or a piece of advice for them.
- We then hear the questions and the madrichim give answers in character.
- They then decide to do what happens in the Torah (see attached sheet)
Conclusion :
- PART 3 (15mins)
- When the chanichim enter the room, Abraham is sitting on the floor with his head in his hands, clearly trying to work through a difficult decision. Once the chanichim are quiet, Abraham explains the beginning of the Akedah and the decision he is faced with, does he sacrifice his son?
- In their groups the madrichim lead the discussion with the questions below.
- The group must come up with what they think Abraham should do in that situation
- Listen to the different answers, then Abraham acts the story out, with madrichim playing Isaac and the angel
