Trigger: (5 mins)
Newspaper front page outlining an upcoming court case. The court case is intended to resolve the still undetermined issues surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process
Main part of the programme :
Method:
Israel’s Defence:
Israeli aims
to guarantee the protection of Israel’s borders.
to ensure that Jerusalem remains the spiritual and ideological capital of Israel.
to have an unconditional end to the terrorism and other violence perpetrated by Palestinians.
Israeli arguments:
~ Israel has a fundamental right to exist; Jews have a claim to the land of Israel. The Jews are the chosen people.
~ Israel has been provoked into military action against the Palestinians because of the problem of violence and terrorism from many Palestinians.
~ Israel believes that they have earned the right to exist by surviving this long. They have fought in many wars against other neighbouring countries. Also the land that they won during the “Six Day War” should really be the only land that Israel should bargain with.
Palestinian’s Defence:
Palestinian aims
< to have a recognised and fully functioning Palestinian state
< to have certain areas of West Bank and land near Gaza returned to the Palestinians in exchange for a cease fire.
< to have Jerusalem shared evenly between themselves and the Israelis.
< to have a complete withdrawal of Israeli security forces in the West Bank.
Palestinian arguments:
~ Most Palestinians believe they have the right to the land of Israel, as they lived on the land before Israel was created, and many lost their homes by Israel’s creation. As a result there are now 4.9 million Palestinian refugees mainly living in Gaza, the West Bank and Jordan.
~ Palestinians have an obligation to fight for their land using any means necessary including terrorism. Many say that the reason they have had to resort to terrorism is as a result of the oppression that they have suffered at the hands of the Israelis.
~ The land that Israel now controls, especially the land that they have occupied after the “Six Day War”, was stolen from them. They want to receive reparations for their losses.
Background Info:
- Israel was created in 1948.
- It is the only Jewish state in the world.
- It spends between 50-60% of its total revenue on its military.

1) Assign plagim different jobs for the trial: (Judge: 2/3, Jury: 9, Israel’s lawyers: 6, Palestine’s lawyers: 6, Witnesses: 5)
2) Two madrichim must work with the witnesses group, one working with the Israeli witnesses and one with the Palestinian ones. Help them to understand the character and opinions that they will have.
3) Two other madrichim must work with the lawyers group, one working with the Israeli witnesses and one with the Palestinian ones. They must have help thinking of lines of arguments and points that they can use to argue their case. They must also decide before the case begins what they want to get out of the court case, whether its land, security, money etc.
4) One madrich/a must help the judge and jury group. They have to discuss the issues that may come up. The madrich/a needs to help them understand the two sides, and what they both want from the case. Each member will get a sheet with background info on the trial and a map of Israel and Palestine, which they can annotate and shade before and during the trial to help them think of ideas. EG. Give back the Golan Heights in exchange for a ceasefire.
5) The trial begins and each team of lawyers gets to argue their case, use witnesses etc. Then the other side has a chance to reply. The judge and jury are allowed to ask any questions at the end of each presentation.
6) The judges and jury have a short time to quickly discuss who they feel made the better argument and what should be done to make peace.
7) The verdict is decided and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is resolved! (easy peasy)
