Water Conservation

Important note regarding the copying of programmes

Aims / Objectives :
Aims – To educate the chanichim on how little water different parts of Israel receive.
 To show the chanichim the importance of water conservation
 To get the chanichim to think for themselves how they can help the environment.

Trigger :
Trigger (15 mins)

- Conduct a 1 minute light warm up (e.g star jumps)
- Give each chanich one cup of water and tell them that they can drink as little or as much of it as they want. (Most should just drink all of it without thinking)
- Then lead a 5-10 minute hard work out (e.g press ups, jogging, running, stretching)
- Then ask if any of the kids want some water..(answer will be obviously yes)…ask anyone if they saved any of their water from earlier (if they did let them finish it…most won’t have and this highlights the value of water conservation)

Main part of the programme :
Method (40 mins)

- Split chanichim into 4 groups (one madrichim with each group); Tel Aviv, Haifa, Beersheva and Eilat.
- Tell them that in order to win some food and water they must match the inches of rainfall to the different cities that they are.
- Give each group paper saying Haifa, Tel Aviv, Beersheva and Eilat and small pieces of paper with number of inches on: 250,200,150,120,100,75,50,25,20,10,1. (Tel Aviv =25, Haifa = 20, Beersheva =10, Eilat =1) As there are so many higher numbers the kids should think its higher than it is, making them surprised to find out the truth. Give them water/biscuits anyway.
- Ask groups to discuss ways in which people can help the environment (including water conservation) (5 mins)
- Tell/Act out that Jerusalem has become very environmentally unfriendly and the government need a new capital city.
- In their cities using their ideas from previous discussion and provided junk/props re-design and make their cities as environmentally friendly as possible in order to try and become the new capital city (like the JNF activity).
- Madrachim/Judges judge cities at the end and award the winner.

Conclusion :
Sikkum (5 mins)

- Ask kids what they have learnt, ways in which they can conserve water..
- Ask if they are grateful for how easily accessible water is in this country
- How can they themselves help the environment in England.
