Israel’s Water Situation Peulah

Important note regarding the copying of programmes

Aims / Objectives :
Aims

 To educate the chanichim about one of the environmental challenges facing Israel.
 To encourage them to think creatively about ways of overcoming these problems.
 To encourage chanichim to co-operate and work collectively.
 To demonstrate various aspects of tikkun olam.
 To give them an idea of some of the work the JNF does.

Trigger :
Trigger

 Whilst we are walking, vouchers are given for the completion of certain tasks:
1. Pick up some litter.
2. Identify some wildlife.
3. Find something blue (not from one of our group)
4. Spot a local.
5. Lead a song/chant.
6. Find something that looks like a face (maybe a stone or something).
7. Carry one of the madrichim’s bags for a reasonable period of time.
8. Find something pre-Industrial Revolution.
9. Make something from grass.
10. Find our way when we’re lost.
11. Other tasks to be thought up on route…
 We stop by the River Ouse (as part of our day’s hike).
 We ask who wants some nice, hot, warming soup.
 Everyone answers ‘yes’ because it is cold and dreary and soup makes you feel good and tastes nice. (Well, at least I hope they answer ‘yes’)
 ‘Excellent’ say the madrichim, ‘you have to buy the water from us with your vouchers’
 But of course there are other water sources around, for instance all the water in the river that we are next to.

Main part of the programme :
Method

 Each chanich is only allowed a very small amount of water each for the majority of their vouchers (i.e. they each have about 10 vouchers by this point, and for 7 of them they get half a cup of water, they have to buy this amount). They only have on cup each.
 One madrich is Turkey (the country); they have lots of water, but will only sell it in bulk at a price.
 Another is a company that produces purification (desalination) equipment. This process is expensive, but provides a slow but virtually unlimited supply of water.
 The third madrich is the Israeli government and JNF. They accept creative (but viable) suggestions for ‘creating’ water. Things like …
o Not using drinking quality water for irrigation and business.
o Digging wells.
o Water preservation campaigns (with specific suggestions, such as washing your car with a bucket not a hose, not running the tap when you brush your teeth, taking short showers rather than baths).
For these suggestions they will receive a small amount of water, varying depending on how effective it might be. Groups who come together with these suggestions will be better rewarded – ‘we will do this’ creates more difference than ‘I will do this’ (although of course individual contributions are very important).
 At certain points they will be beset by problems (sewerage leak into water supply, drought, etc.) and they will have to drink some of their water at set intervals.
 The game ends when they feel they have enough water for everyone to have soup.

Conclusion :
Sikkum/Discussion

 We make some soup together and sit around enjoying it.
 There are printed resources about water conservation and the water situation in Israel.
 Madrichim will start a discussion over the nice warm soup about how this relates to the game we played
o Large but difficult to use water supply nearby (river Ouse/Mediterranean).
o Water supply is used not just for drink, but for food too (soup is food and drink, obviously)
