Aims / Objectives :
Aims
• To introduce the basics of running a game.
• To introduce the use of different games for different purposes. eg groups, GTKY, deal with social issues, educational purpose etc.
Trigger :
Trigger – 5 mins
Play a game (it is a games session…). I will teach a completely new game that no-one (including my good self until about 10 seconds ago) has ever heard of: Snake Break. The rules are that there are two teams, and they have to form a snake (conga/limbo line kinda thing). The snakes cannot touch. The aim is to completely cut off the other snake (back them into a corner). Oh, and all the time, they have to be making snake noises, or else I will remove people from their snake. Let them play this new (and slightly ridiculous) game. I have absolutely no idea whether or not the game will work.
Main part of the programme :
Method – 35 mins
This is going be a chilled out discussion session (they have just had quite a hardcore morning). I will start off by explaining the basics of running a game: clearly explaining how it is going to work, maybe having a practice round, not letting chanichim who know (or think they know) how the game works stop the explanation cos there is always someone who does not know how to play, being fair in your decisions in the game, being flexible if the game is kinda failing and changing games or just ending it.
Then I want to open it up to “the floor” to talk about 3 areas:
1. Why games at all? When are they suitable? When are they not suitable? When do we play games on ljy events? Why do we play them at those times?
2. What purposes do games serve eg (as in aims) groups, GTKY, deal with social issues, educational purpose, informally during free time as something structured? Which kinds of games are suitable for which purposes?
3. What are their favourite games? Their least favourite? Why? What is it about certain games that is really good? Why, for example, is bang so popular? Or even quite complicated games like mafia? What makes a good game for a particular situation.
Conclusion :
Sikkum – 5 mins
Get a volunteer to run a game for all of us (if no-one volunteers, I will run something – copycat I think, or deathstare animal hybrids).
