Dugma Ishit – An Introduction

Important note regarding the copying of programmes

Aims / Objectives :
Aims:

• To outline the basic principles of ‘dugma ishit’
• To begin to think about the wider implications

Trigger :
Trigger:

This is a short sketch aiming to highlight some classic examples of bad dugma.

The fictional character ‘Dave the Dugma Dodger’ walks into the room to deliver a session of hadracha training to those present. We then have a few minutes of him introducing himself and his session, whilst constantly behaving in a manner that would be unsuitable for somebody in his position. This sketch should include some of the following unsuitable behaviour – though clearly in a dramatic context and to illustrate a point, and so therefore temporarily excusable!

• Inappropriate language (mild)
• Punctuality issues
• Inattentiveness
• Inappropriate contact/innuendo with other tzevet members
• Gossiping
• Undermining people
• Etc…

Main part of the programme :

Method:

Part 1
After a few minutes move to a group discussion using a flipchart to note down some ideas that come up. The following questions should be discussed.

1. Were there any problems with the Dave’s behaviour?
2. Why was this behaviour unacceptable?
3. If he weren’t in a hadracha situation would it make any difference?
(5 mins)

Part 2
The participants should now split off into pairs and have a discussion with their partner addressing these questions, before returning to the group to feedback any ideas that came up.

1. Where do you we learn our behaviour from? List some people/things in your life that influence you.
2. Do you think there are any people who are influenced by things that you do?
3. Think about how very young children learn by copying things that others do. To what extent do you think this still applies to us as we grow up?
Come back together as a group. Each person should present some of the things they discussed to the rest of the group.
It should now be clear that the madrichim are in a position of responsibility as the people who run LJY-Netzer, and that the way in which they behave will affect the way the chanichim behave. Make sure this is the main discussion point.
Introduce the term ‘dugma ishit’ – personal example. Stress its importance in hadracha.
(10 mins)

Part 3
The group will be split into two. Each new group will receive a list of hypothetical hadracha scenarios. For each case study they must decide as a group how acceptable the behaviour described is in terms of dugma on a scale of 1 to 5 (1-good, 2-ok, 3- not too bad, 4-preety bad, 5-awful).
After 10 minutes in groups come back together and discuss the decisions and confront any disagreements.

Conclusion :
Sikkum:

A cartoon strip will be drawn on the board as a method of recapping what has been covered in the session. Each frame will depict part of the peulah, with one empty frame left at the end for the madrichim to fill in with ideas for how they will apply the concept of dugma ishit to their work as LJY-Netzer madrichim
