Aims / Objectives :
To encourage a sense of pride in chanichim about the Jewishness in their identity and their potential, and the idea of representing their community well
Trigger :
-Speed rounds of celebrity heads: eg. Minnie mouse, albert Einstein, tom cruise, Ronald mcdonald, steven spielberg, krusty the clown
-Trigger: Three different songs whispered to get into three groups...
‘Mr/Miss superhero’ pageant- as Jewish kids you guys have to come up with your own jewish superhero- what name, age, powers, abilities, little flaws, life span, upbringing, relationships… whole shebang. Announce each thing every couple of minutes so they have time to fine-tune each element. 15 min
-Time to go and dress up and present their superhero to the group with full campaign- he/she should be the new one because… 20 min
Main part of the programme :
-Panel where final judging of each superhero ensues. Questions are asked of a representative from each of the three groups- groups must choose best person for job, best face time. Interviewers (us) wear ties etc. Winner is announced if there really is a good one... otherwise it’s a 'habo draw' 15 min
-Watch Simpson’s episode, or extract, “Like father like clown" 25 min
Conclusion :
Sikkum:
-Talk about jewish people the kids know of in their community and beyond- does it make a difference if we know they’re jewish, does it make us proud?
-Do you think about how you present yourself as a Jewish person, is it different if you go to a Jewish or non-Jewish school? When do we all feel most Jewish- on camp, shabbas, or with non-Jewish friends?
-What was the best thing about our superheroes? Could we be like them even without the powers?
-Krusty and his father eventually made up. In real life, sometimes its different. Why was his father so upset- he wanted his son to behave the way he thought was ‘normal,’ to bring pride and not shame. What would you do if you were krusty, if you were his father, etc.
-Being Jewish is something to always be proud of and to present in an honourable way
