Globalization- for better or worse?

Important note regarding the copying of programmes

Aims / Objectives :
: to educate the kids about the negative effects of globalization on workers, and the exploitations which can occur by their employers etc.

Trigger :
there are two different things going on in the background, sort of ‘mini plays’ to be provided by us.
1) AUSTRALIA – a person is shown working and his employer is seen to be encouraging him. At the end of the ‘work’, the worker is paid the amount which he deserves.
2) CHINA – a person is shown working (in manual labour), while his employer watches on unhappily. It is important that the person playing the role of the employer is harsh and mean. He must work longer then the Australian, and receive less pay.

Main part of the programme :
split kids into two groups: one group are called the ‘Westerners’ and the others are the ‘third Worlders’. Each group is given a piece of paper, on which is written the things which they have and do not have. These will determine the things which they can accomplish in the tasks. For example, if they are third Worlders and cannot read, they obviously can’t successfully complete a task which involves writing a poem.
Each group must go around to different stations in shicklebush style. Their aim is to earn as much money as possible, but also as many benefits as they can. Benefits include medicare, welfare etc. At each station they will need to complete a task in order to get their rewards.
Obviously, the Westerners will naturally have an easier time, reap all the benefits, and think they’re top shit. The third Worlders will just have to put up with shit treatment and little benefits for the desired outcome.
A photo must be taken at each station by each group, in order for there to be evidence of their achievements (they’ll love it).

Stations
Working station – each group must create a human pyramid. The Westerners can hold it for as long as they want to (ie they can stop after 3 seconds), but the Third Worlders must hold it for 10 – 15 seconds.
Money: Westerners receive $5 per person
TW receive $5 per group

Logical station – Each group must solve a riddle (we need to come up with this!). the riddle should not be overly difficult so that the Westerners can solve it, but the TW won’t be able to as they do not have the required skills.
Benefits: Westerners receive free education for 3 members in their group
TW receive nada.

Arts/crafts station – Each group must design and then create an image of the camp site through their eyes.
Benefits: Westerners receive free memberships to the Art Gallery.
TW are allowed to keep their own creation.

Egg and spoon race – Each group must successfully complete an egg and spoon race. The catch is that the Westerners only have to complete one full round, while the TW have to complete two 
Money: Westerners receive $10 per person.
TW receive $10 per group, but only for their first race – the second does not count in terms of rewards.

Westerners

You are Westerners. Westerners come from countries such as Australia, USA, England, France. The people in your country are well educated. They can read, write and communicate in an intelligent way. You are used to being treated well by your employers (your ‘boss’). Your task is to gain as many benefits and as much money as possible from the different stations.
Goodluck!

Third Worlders
You are third Worlders. Third Worlders come from countries such as China, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Sudan. The people in your country are not well educated. They cannot read, write or communicate well. The people in your country are very good at physical work – which is done in factories. They are strong and hard working. However, their employer treats them badly and does not pay them as much money as they deserve. They are forced to work long hours and receive very little benefits.
Your task is to gain as many benefits and as much money as possible from the different stations.
Goodluck!

Conclusion :
get back into one group – or if there are too many kids break off into two.
Questions:
• What group were you in?
• What did you have to do?
• How did you feel about the amount of money/benefit you received?
• Is it fair that the Westerners did less work and received better benefits and treatments than the TW?
• Why do you think this happens?
• Is there any way/s to stop this inequality from happening? Why is it important to do so?
• Why do employers treat their workers badly in TWC?
• How does this help governments?
