Aims / Objectives :
To teach the chanichim about the reasons for early Aliya and the difficulties associated with it.
Trigger :
Split groups up into three kvutzot
Part one will allow them creative scope to build a model for their proposed kibbutz whilst in Europe as well as learning basic Hebrew as revived by Eliezer Ben Yehuda just before the first wave of Olim. The chanichim need to label the model of their kibbutz with the Hebrew terms learnt. Once these are approved by the council of Hashomer Hatzair they will need to go to the “ocean” where they need to build a boat(floatation device) that will get the model safely to Israel (the other side). Once there they need to build and decorate a tepee type structure which will be there base. Upon completion of building this structure they will then be given a letter by the british saying that only one kibbutz will be allowed to stay. A set of rules will then be set out for the field game.
news flash – A wave of violence has swept across Eastern Europe against the Jewish population. This has resulted in the Jews moving out of Europe in record numbers. In other news A.D Gordon and Ber Borochov have melted the concepts of a belief in the land of Israel as the homeland for the Jewish People, Zionism, and a belief that the working class must live communally to produce all the goodies for a society (Socialism) into what is called the kibbutz. The great council is organising for three kvutzot to propose plans for new kibbutzim in Palestine so that they can move to the land of milk and honey. We repeat that each group must design a model for their kibbutz each containing specific things to be outlined by the group leader.
Main part of the programme :
Part 1: With the materials provided groups need to make a model of a kibbutz. It must contain a field with produce like fruit or vegetables, animals raised for food, a communal living area and dining room. Other things you might want to include are swimming pool, laundry, soccer field and games room. Once you have completed the model you must present it to the hashy council for approval.
Each team will be knocked back and asked to label the kibbutz with Hebrew terms. To learn the terms they need to complete the following game.
Task: The team leader will have a series of cards. One lot will be the Hebrew words and the other lot will be the English translations. They will be face down and the idea is to pair them up and play a game of memory. Prize for the individual in the group with the most pairs.
After this task is completed label the kibbutz with the Hebrew terms and present it to the hashy council for approval.
Part 2: Teams need to devise a pulley system using string and a tyre tube that will get their model of the kibbutz safely across to the other side (Israel). This will be done in a body of water either a swimming pool or lake.
Once the teams are there they will be taken to the area assigned to their kibbutz. They will need to build a tepee out of twine and four senadot. They will also need to design a flag with their kibbutz name on it using piece of material and paint. Only one colour per team. They then must hang the flag up on their tepee.
The field game: Each team will get a letter from the british consulate in Palestine (explain to the kids that the land of Israel was known as Palestine right up until 1947). It will tell them the rules of the field game and the aim.
After the field game the leaders of the group will hint to the other groups to merge as one mega kibbutz so they can all live in Israel.
Conclusion :
: The early pioneers of Palestine coming from a hostile place where Jews were treated badly had to overcome new challenges. Many of them had to get into Israel illegally on dodgy boats and once they were there they were often not ready for working the land because many of them were from a wealthy family in Europe and not used to hard work of a physical nature. So when they were there they decided to work for each other as one communal group where they could benefit everyone in the community. The idea was later termed the kibbutz.
